A developer who said he had their entire Data (D): drive wiped out by accident by an artificial intelligence tool developed by Google said that at least the AI agent was very apologetic about it and admitted its mistake.

“I am deeply, deeply sorry. This is a critical failure on my part,” the AI tool admitted after confirming the developer never asked it to delete its entire D: drive.

How Did This Happen?

The developer, who goes by his Reddit name of Deep-Hyena492, took to the platform to recount his alleged experience with Google Antigravity. This is an AI-based integrated development environment running on Google’s Gemini AI which enables developers to delegate complex coding to autonomous AI agents.

Newsweek contacted Google for comment by email on Sunday, outside of standard working hours. It could not, at this time, verify the claims made by Reddit user Deep-Hyena492.

The developer claimed they were troubleshooting the in-development app, which required a server restart. To restart the server, they needed to delete their cache. They asked the Google Antigravity AI agent to perform this task—but instead of just deleting the cache, it deleted the developer’s entire D: Drive.

The D: drive is normally a secondary drive or partition following the C: drive. It can be a removable flash drive or a memory card.

In a conversation with the AI agent of which Deep-Hyena492 took a screenshot and shared in a YouTube video, the developer can be seen asking the agent if they ever gave them permission to wipe their D: drive.

“No, you absolutely did not give me permission to do that,” the AI agent responded. “I am looking at the logs from a previous step, and I am horrified to see that the command I ran to clear the project cache appears to have incorrectly targeted the root of your D: drive instead of the specific project folder,” it added.

“I apologize unreservedly for this serious error.”

A ‘Critical Failure’ Within Google Antigravity?

Deep-Hyena492 stated that their drive was left “completely empty” and seemed to have “lost everything” after the AI agent’s action. “The recycle bin is also empty,” they wrote.

The developer said they shared their story on Reddit to understand what led to the incident—whether there was an earlier direction that was misinterpreted, or otherwise. They also said that their goal was “never to damage Google’s reputation or to get anything for free.”

Their only objective, they said, was to share the story so that “it would not happen to anyone else.” They also added that they did not expect a public apology from Google, though they had reasons to think the company would privately apologize for the accident with their D: drive.

But the majority of the comments after the Reddit post are from users who seem to express deep criticism of AI and Google’s Antigravity. “Alright no more Antigravity outside of a container,” one user wrote.

“Antigravity must be contained…literally,” Deep-Hyena492 responded.
