What To Know

Wendt appeared in nearly every episode of Cheers during its 11-season run from 1982 to 1993. His signature entrance—greeted with a roaring "Norm!" from fellow bar patrons—became a hallmark of the series and a fan-favorite moment each week.

While Norm Peterson was his most recognized role, Wendt's career extended far beyond Cheers. He made guest appearances on numerous shows, including Cheers spinoff Frasier, The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live. He also acted in films like Fletch, Forever Young and Man of the House, and starred in a short-lived eponymous sitcom, The George Wendt Show.

Born and raised in Chicago, Wendt was a proud Second City comedy troupe alumnus. That background shaped his comedic timing and improvisational skills, translating seamlessly into his television and film work. He often credited his Midwestern upbringing for his grounded approach to fame.

Even decades after Cheers ended, Wendt remained closely associated with Norm. He embraced the character's popularity with humor and humility, often reprising the role for cameos and reunions. His portrayal of a loyal, everyman regular at a Boston bar continues to resonate with audiences today.

Wendt has several guest credits to his name, including features in shows like Hot in Cleveland, The Twilight Zone, Fresh Off The Boat and George Lopez. He also competed on The Masked Singer as Moose in Season 9 of the competition show.
