The shooting of a 28-year-old Venezuelan DoorDash delivery driver by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Austin, Texas, has brought the number of people shot by federal immigration agents in 2026 to eleven.

The start of 2026 saw an aggressive expansion of immigration enforcement activity under the Trump administration—resulting in six of the shootings this year taking place in January.

Large-scale operations, including Minnesota's "Operation Metro Surge," brought significantly more ICE and other federal immigration agents into communities, leading to a concentration of high-profile confrontations and shootings during the year's opening weeks.

Newsweek has reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the FBI via email for comment.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Newsweek on Tuesday: "ICE continuously reviews and analyzes its use-of-force data to ensure our policies support our mission while protecting both our officers and the public. The changes to our policy will help reduce legal, operational, and employee-wellness risks, allowing leadership to assess next steps for an officer involved in a use-of-force incident rather than an automatic end to their administrative leave.

"ICE law enforcement officers are trained to use the minimum amount of force necessary to resolve dangerous situations to prioritize the safety of the public and our officers," the statement continued. "Officers are highly trained in de-escalation tactics and regularly receive ongoing use of force training. The men and women of ICE are entrusted with upholding the rule of law and are held to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct. Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S."
