Former National Football League (NFL) quarterback and current FOX Sports broadcaster Mark Sanchez has been arrested on several charges after he was hospitalized in a stabbing incident in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday morning, according to an updated post on X by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

"Sanchez was arrested at the hospital for battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication, all which are misdemeanors," IMPD wrote. "Sanchez is still in the hospital and has not been booked into the Adult Detention Center."

The former New York Jets QB was in Indianapolis to call the Raiders-Colts game on Sunday, according to a post on X from ESPN's Adam Schefter Saturday afternoon.

“We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time,” FOX said in a statement before the announcement of Sanchez's arrest.

Newsweek reached out to FOX for further comment by email Saturday night.

The Context

Sanchez played in the NFL through 2018 for the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and former Washington Redskins, before becoming a broadcaster.

The incident occurred while Sanchez was in Indianapolis for his broadcasting duties with FOX Sports where he was scheduled to provide commentary for Sunday's Indianapolis Colts vs. Las Vegas Raiders game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

While there are still questions surrounding the circumstances of the incident, IMPD said that Sanchez was arrested for his role in the incident and there are no outstanding suspects.

What To Know

Emergency responders were called to the scene around 12:30 a.m. local time where IMPD officers found two injured individuals where one had been stabbed, and another was injured during a reported physical altercation.

IMPD said in its initial statement that they would not name the victim but Sanchez, 38, was identified as one of them and was hospitalized in critical condition, multiple outlets, like TMZ and the New York Post, reported at the time.

While Sanchez has been arrested, IMPD said "the Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision," adding that "an arrest is merely an accusation, and Sanchez should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law."

Police have not identified the other person involved in the incident but did say they were not local and that it was "not a random act of violence."
