Temperatures in Northern Florida could feel as low as the single digits when accompanied by wind chill late this coming weekend as a surge of arctic air descends into the Sunshine State.
Actual temperatures will be in the low 20s in Northern Florida and near freezing as far south as West Palm Beach, with Miami anticipating morning lows of 36 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday morning, according to a post on X from FOX35 Orlando senior meteorologist Noah Bergren. A National Weather Service (NWS) Miami spokesperson told Newsweek that average lows in Miami this time of year are around 62 degrees.
The forecast comes as NWS meteorologists warn of a new incoming winter storm that could dump heavy snow on the Carolinas and usher in frigid temperatures to the U.S. South, only a week after Winter Storm Fern ravaged the region with accumulating ice.

The incoming cold weather could break records in Florida.

"RECORD COLD: This will end up a very significant hard freeze for two nights. Starts Sunday morning. Wind chills into the 20s even in Miami," Bergren posted on X on Tuesday. "Single digits above 0° in the Panhandle. Coldest air temps. in Miami, West Palm Beach, and Orlando since the historic 2010 cold outbreak. Bast on our research, also a top-10 coldest wind chill event on record in central Florida."
A map included with Bergren's post showed wind chill values as low as 9 degrees in Tallahassee and 8 degrees in Jacksonville.
WFLA-TV Chief Meteorologist Jeff Berardelli warned that the incoming weather would be a "generational cold" event for Florida.
"Alert: *Generational Cold Event* The coldest air since 2010 arrives Sunday morning," Berardelli posted on X. "I can’t remember the last time #Florida had single digits for wind chills. Prepare a #freeze all the way into the Everglades. For Floridians, #cold this extreme can be dangerous, but we have days to prepare."
Florida Was Colder Than Juneau, Alaska, on Wednesday Morning
On Wednesday morning, residents in Orlando, Florida, woke up to temperatures colder than in Juneau, Alaska, according to Bergren. The temperature was 32 degrees Fahrenheit in Orlando, compared to 33 degrees in Juneau.
Temperatures have already been low enough across Florida to prompt numerous freeze warnings and cold weather advisories from local NWS offices this week.
"Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing," NWS Melbourne said in a cold weather advisory. "Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. Bring pets and potted plants indoors. Check on elderly neighbors to make sure their furnace is working. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they can be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly."
Most of the freeze warnings and cold weather advisories currently in place are set to expire before the weekend, so NWS offices will likely issue a new batch of warnings ahead of the incoming cold spell this weekend.
Numerous NWS offices in Florida have already started warning people of the incoming weather.
