Country music star Zach Bryan has sparked an intense debate among fans and political commentators with the release of a snippet from his new song "Bad News."

Newsweek reached out to Bryan's representative via email for comment on Tuesday.

Why It Matters

The lyrics, featuring explicit criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids under President Donald Trump’s administration, have led to fierce condemnation from conservative fans and commentators, while others have praised Bryan’s willingness to address politically charged issues. The incident highlights the ongoing divisions over immigration policy, the political expectations placed on country music performers and the national conversation around artistic expression.

What To Know

Bryan, a Grammy Award-winning singer and U.S. Navy veteran, posted a teaser clip of his new song on Instagram on Friday. The song’s lyrics reference ICE raids: "ICE is gonna come, bust down your door / Try to build a house no one builds no more / But I've got a telephone / Kids are all scared and all alone."

Bryan further sings about a loss of American unity, declaring: "I've got some bad news / The fading of the red, white and blue."

The track comes after Bryan set an attendance record at Michigan Stadium, where over 112,000 fans attended his concert, TIME magazine reported. The song’s release coincided with heightened tensions over immigration enforcement across American cities, particularly as Trump’s administration announced large-scale deportation strategies targeting so-called "sanctuary cities."

The lyrics quickly went viral, drawing sharp political lines among Bryan’s supporters and critics.

Bryan previously described himself as a libertarian and declared that his music wasn't political. In 2023, the 29-year-old spoke out on transgender rights.

"I just think insulting transgender people is completely wrong because we live in a country where we can all just be who we want to be," he wrote on X at the time. "It’s a great day to be alive, I thought."

What People Are Saying

The song’s anti-ICE message provoked a blitz of responses, particularly from right-wing commentators and MAGA-aligned country music fans.

John Rich, one-half of the duo Big & Rich, wrote on X: "Who's ready for the Zach Bryan-Dixie Chicks tour? Prob a huge Bud Light sponsorship for this one."

In a separate X post, Rich said: "Nashville is full of guys like this."

Conservative political commentator and Tomi Lahren is Fearless host Tomi Lahren responded to Rich on X: "Trash."

Conservative commentator and MAGA loyalist Benny Johnson said on X: "Country superstar Zach Bryan takes aim at ICE, claiming the country is fading in a snippet from his upcoming song 'Bad News.'"

"'Cocky motherf****** ain’t they. And ICE is gonna come, bust down your door. The fading of the red, white, and blue' He just drew over 112,000 fans to what became the largest concert in U.S. history last week. Now, that will never happen again. When will they learn?"

X user @DogRightGirl, who is followed by Rich and Kid Rock, posted a message with 214,400 views and 14,000 likes: "Zach Bryan just lost most of his audience. What an idiot."

Others, meanwhile, praised Bryan for his stance.

X user @scoobydoolovr wrote in a note with 358,400 views and over 38,000 likes: "Im not a fan of Zach Bryan by any means but calling out ICE in a song as one of the biggest modern country artists is actually huge."

Michelle Kinney, co-founder and chief creative officer of The Seneca Project, said on X in a comment with 183,300 views and 6,800 likes: "F YEAH!!! Country singer and military veteran Zach Bryan drops new song criticizing ICE and the collapse of American democracy. This moment calls for moral and artistic courage — MORE OF THIS!!!"

X's @Tyre_94 added in a remark with 692,600 views and 27,000 likes: "Wait Zach Bryan, Im sorry I wasn’t familiar with your game."

What Are Zach Bryan's 'Bad News' Lyrics?

Didn't wake up dead or in jail
Some out-of-town boys been giving us hell
I got some bad news, I woke up missing you
My friends are all degenerates but they're all I've got
The generational story of dropping the plot
I heard the cops came, cocky motherf******, ain't they?
And ICE is gonna come bust down your door
To try and build a house no one builds no more, but I got a telephone
Kids are all scared and all alone
The bar stopped bumping, the rock stopped rolling
The middlе fingers rising and it won't stop showing
Got some bad news, thе fading of the red, white and blue

What Happens Next

At the time of publication, Bryan has not announced a release date for the full-length version of "Bad News."

The backlash against him mirrors past controversies, such as the boycott of Bud Light following its partnership with a transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney and The Chicks' (previously known as the Dixie Chicks) experience after speaking out against the Iraq War.
