Ethan Hawke has managed to carve out a solid niche for himself over the course of a decorated, five-decade filmography.

The four-time Academy Award nominee hit the ground running as a kid actor. He was discovered by director Joe Dante for the 1985 cult sci-fi adventure Explorers, and has since starred in classics like Dead Poets’ Society (1989), Reality Bites (1994), the Before trilogy (1995-2014), Gattaca (1997), and Training Day (2001).

Hawke has been making a point this century to balance his output between challenging indie film and TV fare as well as clever genre cinema. For every First Reformed (2017), he'll get his hands dirty in The Purge (2013). That dynamic has largely remained in place through the present day.

The 55-year-old may be on the Oscar trail once again, thanks to his performance as doomed alcoholic musical lyricist Lorenz Hart in frequent collaborator Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon. But he’s also the anchor of a burgeoning horror franchise, whose second installment is heading to an exclusive streaming home very soon.

Hawke revisited his role as the demented ‘70s serial kidnapper The Grabber — despite dying in the first movie — for last fall’s supernatural sequel The Black Phone 2, helmed by modern horror maestro Scott Derrickson. The Universal/Blumhouse sequel made a mint upon its October 2025 release, grossing $77.4 million domestically and $54.8 million abroad for a combined $132.2 million global haul.

When Does ‘The Black Phone 2’ Arrive on Peacock?

Now, the film is slated to hit Universal’s streaming platform, Peacock, for an exclusive free-to-subscribers window next Friday, Jan. 16, according to a new report from Deadline’s Matt Grobar.

For non-Peacock subscribers, The Black Phone 2 is also available as a rental right now, on various platforms.

Hawke earned his seventh Critics’ Choice nomination and his third Golden Globe nod for his work in the poignant Blue Moon. He’ll learn his Oscar fate when nominations are announced on Jan. 22. His Lorenz Hart is markedly different from The Grabber.

About the only surface thing the two characters have in common is that, in conversation, they’re chatty extroverts. Of course, their aims are very different, although one could say both are invested in achieving a kind of destruction: The Grabber is on a mission to eradicate his enemies, while the relapsing Hart wants to trash his rival Oscar Hammerstein II en route to a hoped-for creative reunion with longtime Broadway partner Richard Rodgers. Ultimately, both get in their own way a bit.
