James Gunn has already introduced the world to the DCU, as "Creature Commandos" was released on HBO Max. Despite being important to the overarching universe, it was not the first live-action property in his plans.

That honor belongs to "Superman," which came rocketing into theaters and has set an important box office milestone, being the first superhero movie to hit the $600 million mark in 2025.

The usual case for the superhero genre is that Marvel films are the ones bringing fans in by the thousands. However, that has not been the case for the studio in 2025, and DC has firmly taken the top spot.

Through the weekend, "Superman" has now grossed $604 million, and is far more than any of the Marvel films released this year.

Second is "Fantastic Four: First Steps," which currently grossed $490 million and is expected to close at $500 million. Third is "Captain America: Brave New World," which secured $415.1 million.

Fourth is "Thunderbolts," which grossed $382.4 million.

What is even more impressive for "Superman" landing this milestone is that the film did not have a strong gate overseas. The usual case is that superhero movies do well in the United States, and often even better in other countries.

Gunn was always expected to jumpstart DC when he took over alongside Peter Safran, but it appears that he had hit the ground running in terms of live-action properties. The writer and director also stated that the DCU is set to expand next with "The Batman: Part 2" and the presumed "Superman" sequel.

Gunn has reportedly already begun work on the sequel to the latest film on the Last Son of Krypton, which makes a ton of sense. The first live-action film in the DCU might have pushed the sequel into high priority.

DC has not often been the box office leader among the superhero genre, but it appears that Gunn has found a great formula.

With "Peacemaker" Season 2 carrying the torch for the DCU in terms of live-action shows, there is a lot to praise with Gunn's direction thus far. "Peacemaker" has only begun, but it carries on right after the events of the live-action box office leader.

Gunn also teased that there could be a big "Superman" cameo coming at the end of the second season of the hit series. Considering Peacemaker showed up in a small cameo in "Superman," it would be believed that Superman might do the same.
