The highly anticipated sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix's most viewed film of all time, has officially received the green light from the streaming platform.

In a statement from Netflix on Thursday confirming the sequel, the film’s creator and co-director Maggie Kang said: “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.” She added: “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters.”

The film’s co-director Chris Appelhans said the statement: “We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve—and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”

KPop Demon Hunters, produced in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, has reached more than 500 million views on Netflix since it premiered in June 2025, according to Netflix.

The movie has received a string of accolades in recent months, including two Golden Globe wins of its three nominations, as well as two Critics Choice Awards, winning the best original song and best animated feature categories for both of the awards. The film also earned two Oscar nominations in the same two categories.

Here, we unpack everything that’s been said so far about the upcoming sequel in recent months.

What KPop Demon Hunters Directors Have Said About Sequel

The smash hit film follows a fictional K-pop girl band HUNTR/X who hunt down and chase away demons who try to take human souls away from the Earth. They later meet a rival group called the Saja Boys, demons disguised as a boy band who are looking to catch human souls.

Asked about the sequel in August, just two months after the film’s debut, co-director Appelhans told Newsweek that he and Kang were "excited to explore what's next" for the budding franchise.

When asked about what’s happening in the sequel, co-director Kang said in an interview with Deadline in February that they’ve had to “think about so many things beyond what's in the first movie…all the backstories…to really create that entire world...to tell that one part of that world."

Last summer, alluding to the possibility of a sequel at the time, co-director Kang said the next film would allow more room to unpack the origins of HUNTR/X and “reveal more of that backstory,” she told Entertainment Weekly in August.

"We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that's brand new to people," Kang told Entertainment Weekly. "What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?"

KPop Demon Hunters Cast Member on Sequel Plot

Ahn Hyo-seop is the actor from a string of K-dramas, including Business Proposal, who is the voice behind Jinu, the lead singer of the Saja Boys.

Asked about the sequel, Ahn told CBS News in September: “I don't have too much information, but what excites me is that all these characters are just they're just beginning their journey…they face challenges, but there's still a lot of room to grow. So, I'd love to see how their bonds deepens and how their music continues to be a weapon of hope.”

Jinu’s heartbreaking final scene in KPop Demon Hunters sees him sacrifice himself to save Rumi, the lead singer of HUNTR/X. His last line in the film is a message to Rumi saying: “You gave me my soul back … and now, I give it to you.”

Ahn hope to see Jinu reunited with his soul in the sequel. “Personally, I just wish to see Jinu again...please give me a soul back,” he told CBS News.

‘Golden’ Artist Ejae on KPop Demon Hunters Sequel Soundtrack

Ejae, the singing voice of Rumi, who co-wrote the Grammy Award-winning song “Golden,” said she is hopeful to be asked to work on the sequel.

Asked whether she will be invited back to help write the songs for the sequel, Ejae said: “I hope so,” in a March 9 interview with Daniel Wall’s YouTube channel .

Asked about the pressures of having to follow up on the success of the first film, Ejae said: “I honestly don't feel pressured at all because what I did during [KPop Demon Hunters] was exactly what I've been doing…there was nothing different that I did. I followed my instincts…if you work hard and you keep making melodies over and over again, it comes to you.”

With a host of catchy anthemic tunes, KPop Demon Hunters' original soundtrack has become a global phenomenon on its own. Earlier this year, the film’s soundtrack scored five Grammy Award nominations, including the award Song of the Year for “Golden.”

The song went on to receive the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, marking a historic first-ever Grammy win for a K-pop song, a feat that global K-pop group BTS hadn’t achieved despite earning multiple Grammy nominations to date.
