Donnie Yen has revealed he could be hopping in the director's chair to helm a spinoff of his character from John Wick, called Caine.

The actor and martial arts master plays Caine, a blind assassin who uses advanced hearing to beat-up bad guys in creative and brutal ways, as well as - what else? - a cane.

Speaking to Collider, Yen shared plans for his potentially self-directed Caine movie. "I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we'll see. I don't know. I can only tell you that much. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We'll see what happens."

Viewers know Yen best as a long-running action star dating back to the mid-eighties, with roles in the IP Man series, Hero, Shanghai Nights and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His directorial experience stretches almost as far back, making his feature film debut behind the camera in 1997's Legend of the Wolf.

His latest directorial effort, The Prosecutor, released 24 December, 2024. A Hong Kong thriller, it follows Fok Chi-ho, a former police detective turned public prosecutor who fights to save an innocent man from being convicted in a drug trafficking case.

The film, which was well-received with 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, has put him in contention for directing the Caine movie. That's something Yen holds in high regard.

Will Donnie Yen direct Caine?

"At the same time," he adds, "I hold responsibility as well as a pressure that I don't want to ruin the franchise. I try to do my best to bring something fresh to the franchise itself. I don't want to bring down the expectations for the fans. I try to do my best, like always."

Yen didn't let slip too many details, but did tease he has a few concepts in mind that would make John Wick fans want to flock to the theatre.

"I have to flesh it out. I have a couple of ideas in my mind of how I would like the story to go. But we'll see. I don't want to give away too much because I don't know if I'm in that position to give that away. But they've been very persistent, and they've been very passionate about me taking on this project."

Before then comes another John Wick spinoff, Ballerina. Starring Ana de Armas and featuring an appearance by Keanu Reeves, it centres around Russian assassin Eve seeking revenge after her father's death. It releases in cinemas June 6, 2025

While his involvement is up in the air at this point, Donnie Yen confirms the Sleeping Dogs movie is no longer happening.
