When comic book fans found out that an "Avengers: Secret Wars" movie was on the way, it begged the question, "which 'Secret Wars?'" Marvel Comics's first "Secret Wars" event was released in the '80s and was much different from the "Secret Wars" it released between 2015 and 2016. According to Joe Russo, the answer is that it will somehow be based on both fictional events.

Speaking to TechRadar, Joe Russo said, "Well, we always create our own version of the story. So, we use the comics as loose inspiration. But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That's something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic [and they're] very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we'll draw inspiration from both of them."

Arguably the most surprising part about this news is that the Russos are pulling inspiration from the original 1984-5 run. The original "Secret Wars" deals with a godlike being called The Beyonder who summons most of Marvel's heroes and many of its villains to Battleworld, where they are told if they slay their enemies they will get everything they desire.
The 2015-16 "Secret Wars," on the other hand, is much more aligned with where the MCU has been headed ever since 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." After the multiverse finally dies, Doctor Doom resurrects it as a single world and sets himself up as ruler. Battleworld is populated by beings from all over the multiverse. For example, Doom's police force is the Thor Corp: an army of Thors from alternate universes.
If a recent leak of "Avengers" concept art is to be trusted, we've already seen some of the inspiration drawn from the 2015-16 "Secret Wars." One image shows God Doom holding court in his white robes, while another shows Hulk in what appears to be a medieval version of Battleworld's Greenland - in the comics, Greenland is made up of warring tribes of green, red, and gray Hulks.
We should remember that Russo makes it clear this will be a "loose" adaptation and that's to be expected. The MCU is already full of films based on specific comic book storylines - "Civil War," "Age of Ultron," "Infinity War" - whose content veered wildly away from the source material.
"Avengers: Doomsday" is scheduled to hit theaters May 1, 2026, while "Avengers: Secret Wars" is set to bow on May 7, 2027.
