Cher's appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL) has sparked speculation the music legend may have lip synced during her performance this weekend.

The singer last appeared as the musical guest on SNL nearly 40 years ago, back in late 1987—although she has featured on the show several times since.

The 79-year-old was previously accused of lip syncing during her late 2023 performance at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

'Why Lip Sync?'

Cher donned a bright blonde wig to perform a rendition of her 2023 song, "DJ Play a Christmas Song," after being introduced to the stage by Ariana Grande.

Viewers online were quick to air their thoughts on whether the star was singing live or was using auto-tune during her performance.

"She isn’t even singing…this is some of the worst lip syncing I have ever seen," one social media user wrote on X. "Cher is absolutely not singing live," another said.

"Why lip sync?," one YouTube user added. "Such a beautiful song and such an amazing artist."

Others said they believed Cher was not performing live, but played down any possible impact. "Cher just did one of the worst lip syncs I’ve ever seen on SNL, which obviously makes her even more iconic," one user said.

"I don’t mind the lip syncing cuz she actually can sing and do whatever she wants at this point," another watcher wrote in reaction to the SNL clip of Cher's Christmassy performance, posted to YouTube.

"Who cares if she's lip-syncing, SHE'S CHER B****," another user wrote.

"Cher, killing it at 79," another quipped. "Idc [I don't care] about her lip syncing, it's late, she's 80, she just wants to have some fun," one watcher wrote in the YouTube comments.

"I couldn’t care less she’s lip syncing," another account said. "This is so fun."

"Cher was definitely not signing live! Which is understandable!" another said.

"The icon of icons, who can do NO wrong, even when she lip syncs!," one YouTube user commented.

This weekend's SNL marked the final show for Bowen Yang, the comedian who has long been one of its most prominent cast members. Yang had announced he was leaving SNL in a post to Instagram on Saturday, saying he was "grateful for every minute of my time there."

Yang joined SNL as a writer in 2018 before quickly joining the on-air cast.
