Cynthia Erivo is starring as the misunderstood witch Elphaba in the highly-anticipated Wicked movie, a character who is famous for "Defying Gravity." But the questions she was asked by Dax Shepard on his podcast, Armchair Expert, were perhaps a little too down to earth.
Erivo, 37, is known for her larger-than-life fashion sense, as well as the long, lacquered fingernails she often coordinates with her outfits. "When you're wiping your butt..." the actor and host asked the Broadway star, who immediately knew where he was going with this line of reasoning. "I knew you would ask that question," she laughed. When Shepard insisted that "everyone's afraid to ask," about the mechanics of wiping, Erivo informed him that people ask her quite frequently. "Everybody asks that question, and my answer is nobody uses just their fingers to wipe their backside. You use tissue, correct? And you wipe!"
Still, the Parenthood star needed more details. "I guess my question is does the tissue go on the tip of the fingernails or do you try to get the tissue...," Shepard trailed off. The Color Purple Tony-winner explained that it's the "pads of the fingers" that hold her TP. While she wasn't offended by the question, she admitted to being a bit "annoyed" at the implication that she would be wiping incorrectly.
"I get it, but also, I'm a functioning adult and I've never walked around smelling like... you know..." she said. "Here's the thing, there are people who do not have nails who need to check how they're wiping."
Wicked also stars Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh, along with several other notable names. The movie premieres in the United States on November 22.
