The opening of the Indie Game Festival Awards acknowledged a fractured industry and the people who weren't able to be there. The awards show presenters communicated overwhelmingly a gratitude for both people who play indie games and make them. A variety of people who work on games couldn't make it to the show, maybe the trip was too expensive, but also because they don't feel safe.

Overall, it was a highlight of GDC for independent developers to get a level of deserved recognition.

Baby Steps was nominated for five awards. Like many of the video games by Bennett Foddy, part comedic expression, part rage-inducing environmental adventure game; Baby Steps received strong critical reception when it launched. Having played it myself, the humor may be off-putting to some; but what's contained is a smart satire on individual frustration and the art of interactive entertainment as a whole.
