The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classifed an earlier food recall from California-based Best Express Foods of two of its baked products as Class II, which means that the consumption of the recalled products might cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
The voluntary recall was initiated by Best Express Foods, a company headquartered in Stockton, California, on June 18 and according to an FDA report is still ongoing. The recalled products include 1,419,075 units of Universal Bakery Organic Aussie Bites in 30-ounce packaging and 104,160 units of Universal Bakery Organic Sunrise Energy Bars in 30-ounce and 10-ounce packaging.
While both products are made with rolled oats and are branded as "gluten-free," the company reported the potential presence of an undeclared gluten product. The FDA report writes that "consumer advocacy group testing revealed results above 20 ppm [parts per million] for gluten."

Newsweek contacted Best Express Foods for comment by email on Wednesday morning, outside of working hours.
The FDA classified the product recalls as Class II on Tuesday, July 23. The agency can label any food or drink recall as either Class III, which indicates that consumption or exposure to the recalled product is unlikely to cause adverse health consequences; Class II, which indicates that the probability of suffering serious adverse health consequences "is remote"; or Class I, its most severe type—a recall with this classification indicates that the consumption or exposure to the affected product can cause "serious adverse health consequences or death."
People with gluten intolerance or celiac disease should avoid eating the recalled products as it could make them sick. Consuming products containing gluten can cause them to develop symptoms like hives, rash, nausea, stomach cramps and diarrhea. In the worst-case scenario possible, they can go into anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction.
In the long term, the consumption of gluten products can lead to people with celiac disease damaging their stomach lining, a condition with lifelong consequences.
