President Donald Trump responded to a question during Tuesday's Cabinet meeting about pop star Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs' Travis Kelce's engagement announcement.

A reporter said, "I have to tell you, the biggest pop culture news of the year broke while we were in this Cabinet meeting. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are engaged, and the world wants your reaction, sir."

Trump replied, "Well, I wish them a lot of luck. I think he's a great player, he's a great guy. I think that she's a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck."

Why It Matters

Swift has not shied away from criticizing Donald Trump, calling his presidency an "autocracy" and accusing him of relying on "the dirtiest tricks" in politics. In recent years, she has endorsed Democratic candidates, backing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020 and Harris and Tim Walz in 2024. Swift has also urged her fans to register to vote and participate in elections, a stance that has often put her in direct opposition to Trump's policies and rhetoric.

Trump, who once praised Swift as "fantastic" and "terrific," has turned sharply critical since she entered the political fray. After her 2018 endorsement of Democrats, he quipped he liked her music "about 25 percent less." More recently, he posted "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!" on Truth Social following her 2024 endorsement of Harris. This year, he reignited the feud by mocking her during a White House event, saying she was "no longer hot" and referencing her attendance at the Super Bowl, where the Kansas City Chiefs lost.

Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce Relationship Timeline

Kelce first attended Swift's Eras Tour on July 8, 2023. Kelce said on his podcast New Heights that he was unable to give a bracelet to Swift, and he was "disappointed that she doesn't talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings."

Swift attended a Kansas City Chiefs game on September 24, 2023.

"We actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I'm grateful for, because we got to get to know each other. By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple," Swift said in an interview with TIME.

She continued to attend games throughout the season and supported him at the 2024 Super Bowl.

In June 2024, Kelce joined Swift onstage at the Eras Tour.

Swift appeared as a guest on New Heights alongside Travis and his brother, Jason Kelce, earlier this month.
