President Donald Trump has welcomed a new Senate deal on Department of Homeland Security funding ahead of a looming government shutdown.
"Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to get the vast majority of the Government funded until September, while at the same time providing an extension to the Department of Homeland Security (including the very important Coast Guard, which we are expanding and rebuilding like never before," Trump said on Truth Social.
Why It Matters
Trump oversaw the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, with a deal reached after 43 days. Both Republicans and Democrats blamed each other for the stall, which ended up leading to mass layoffs of the federal workforce and states picking up the cost of food assistance and other federal aid programs.

However, Democrats made clear that they were prepared for another shutdown in the face of spiraling confidence in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the fatal shooting of two Americans—Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti—by federal agents in Minneapolis earlier this month in separate incidents.
Democrats say they will withhold the votes Republicans need to keep the government open unless the Trump administration agrees to major changes at ICE and related agencies.

What To Know
With just a day to go before a shutdown would commence, Democrats and the White House have struck a deal that will separate DHS funding from the main government package, which includes five bipartisan bills, and will fund Homeland Security for just two weeks while negotiations over restrictions on ICE continue.
Today's deal was made hours after Democrats and eight Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, blocked the original bill in the Senate.
House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana told The Associated Press on Thursday that he had been “vehemently opposed” to breaking up the funding package, but “if it is broken up, we will have to move it as quickly as possible. We can’t have the government shut down.”
Meanwhile, Trump hailed the deal and urged both parties to vote "YES" to avoid the shutdown, which he warned was "the only thing that can slow our Country down."
A vote on the deal could happen as soon as Thursday evening, although Republican leadership is checking with members to ensure their support and that no objections to the deal as-is currently exist so that it can pass as quickly as possible, even as they remain hesitant about the mere two-week extension to discuss DHS funding.
What People Are Saying
President Donald Trump on Truth Social: "America is setting Records in every way, and our Growth Numbers are among the best ever. The only thing that can slow our Country down is another long and damaging Government Shutdown. I am working hard with Congress to ensure that we are able to fully fund the Government, without delay. Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to get the vast majority of the Government funded until September, while at the same time providing an extension to the Department of Homeland Security (including the very important Coast Guard, which we are expanding and rebuilding like never before). Hopefully, both Republicans and Democrats will give a very much needed Bipartisan “YES” Vote."
White House Spokeswoman Liz Huston, in a comment to Newsweek: “President Trump is the most transparent and accessible President in American history. President Trump takes unrestricted questions from the legacy media and posts directly from his Truth Social account on the most important issues facing our nation every single day. The American people have never had a more direct and authentic relationship with a President of the United States than they have with President Trump."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on X: "Trump's number one priority has been to make the wealthy, wealthier—it has never been the millions of young Americans looking to buy their first home. He’s giving the middle finger to our youngest generation. [Senate Dems] are focused on making homeownership possible for everyone."
Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a Democrat, on X: "This is a moment to dig down deep. I'm grateful to the former federal workers who took a moment to honor Alex Pretti's memory and who keep speaking up for what's right. We won't stop pushing for accountability."
