A 40-year-old Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employee was "brutally shot and stabbed to death" while she walked her dog on Monday during a series of violent attacks in Georgia, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has said.

Lauren Bullis was found on Battle Forest Drive about 6:50 a.m., hours after two other attacks believed to be connected, Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday.

A woman was found dead after suffering "multiple gunshot wounds" outside a Checkers location on Wesley Chapel Road shortly before 1 a.m., Gurley said. "She was transported to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries," he added.

A 49-year-old homeless man was shot "multiple times" from a vehicle as he slept outside a nearby Kroger store shortly before 2 a.m., Gurley said. Officers rendered aid to the man who will "hopefully survive the injuries," the police chief added. "It is apparent to us that this was a completely random attack," Gurley said.

Suspect Olaolukitan Adon Abel was arrested on Monday. The 26-year-old of Atlanta is a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from the United Kingdom, and was arrested Monday following a series of random attacks in DeKalb County.

"Yesterday, a DHS employee, Lauren Bullis, was brutally shot and stabbed to death by Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old, born in the United Kingdom, who was naturalized by the Biden Administration in 2022," DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a news release. "Since President Trump took office, USCIS has implemented measures to ensure individuals with criminal histories and who otherwise lack good moral character do not attain citizenship."

Newsweek contacted Brookhaven Police Department and the DHS via email before regular office hours on Wednesday.

In a social media post, Lee Renfroe, who said he was Bullis' cousin, wrote that she was “taken from us way too soon" after being "brutally murdered." He described Bullis as a “very special family member” and said she “will always live in our hearts.”

"We love you and miss you, Lauren," Renfroe wrote.
