The Houston Astros are bound to lose their ace, Framber Valdez, to free agency this winter, and it's going to crush their pitching staff, assuming it happens. The Astros don't have the money to compete with some of the big-market clubs in huge free agency sweepstakes.
The Chicago Cubs are a potential suitor for Valdez, especially after they let go of Shota Imanaga earlier this winter.
Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly recently predicted the Cubs would sign Valdez to a huge four-year, $114 million deal this winter.

"Between a bizarre ending in Houston and the qualifying offer being attached to him, Valdez may not do as well in terms of years as some are projecting," Kelly wrote. "But while he may not break into the top five in average annual value, a $28.5 million AAV would give him the sixth-highest mark among all starters, slightly ahead of Garrett Crochet ($28.33). We've also included a club option for a fifth season."
Valdez is one of the better pitchers in free agency this winter, which should certainly put him on the Cubs' radar.
Chicago needs to add an ace for the top of their rotation. Valdez would be an ace on a lot of teams in baseball, including the Cubs. There are some aspects about Valdez to be a bit worried about, but the Cubs need pitching as desperately as any team in the league. If they can land Valdez for $114 million, it would be a no-brainer decision to make.
