Police and federal authorities are investigating a shooting close to a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday that has left one person dead.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Columbus said in a X post that agents were responding to the reported incident on the 2200 block of Albert Avenue in the city, initially saying the incident happened at a mosque.
The Alrahma Mosque is situated on the street where the incident took place, but police later said the incident was not an attack on the mosque, noting it had happened at a nearby apartment complex at around 2:10 p.m. local time.

"This investigation is in its’ infancy," an ATF spokesperson initially told Newsweek, adding later that, "Preliminary information indicates that funeral attendees had exited the Alrahma Mosque, located at 2226 Albert Avenue in Columbus, Ohio, when shots were reportedly fired by an undetermined number of individuals."
The Columbus Dispatch reported that the shooting happened while a funeral was taking place at the mosque, citing a photographer at the scene. Local TV news showed police trying to manage a crowd of people in the street nearby, as funeral goers and others in the community spilled onto the street, with reports of arguments and shoving.
"One individual has been confirmed deceased," the ATF spokesperson said. "Earlier reports of a possible second victim have not been confirmed at this time. ATF Special Agents are assisting the Columbus Division of Police with the ongoing investigation. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available."
Columbus Division of Police later confirmed details to Newsweek, with a spokesperson saying the incident took place in the parking lot of an apartment complex "adjacent to the mosque."
"We understand information was provided that this may have occurred at a mosque. While we are still in the preliminary stages of the investigation as to the details regarding this shooting, this was not a targeted attack on the mosque, nor did this incident occur at the mosque," the spokesperson said.
The FBI told Newsweek it had offered resources to the investigation, deferring to the police department for further details.
Newsweek also reached out to the Alrahma Mosque and the Ohio Department of Public Safety for comment Monday afternoon.
