Cloudflare noted a "spike in unusual traffic" before some of its services experienced an outage early on Tuesday morning, causing problems across the internet as users of major digital platforms, including X and ChatGPT, reported issues.

A spokesperson for Cloudflare, a cybersecurity and web technology firm in San Francisco, said in a statement, "We do not yet know the cause" of the spike.

"We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors," the spokesperson said. "After that, we will turn our attention to investigating the cause of the unusual spike in traffic."

The outage illustrates the risks and vulnerabilities of the highly centralized nature of the internet's digital infrastructure, with many of the most important and widely used services and websites relying on a handful of big providers.

Cloudflare Says Outage Resolved

Shortly after 9:40 a.m. Eastern time, Cloudflare said it had resolved the problem.

"A fix has been implemented and we believe the incident is now resolved," the status update said. "We are continuing to monitor for errors to ensure all services are back to normal."

Other websites and services that experienced issues included President Donald Trump's Truth Social platform, Shopify, Dropbox, Coinbase, online game League of Legends, Moody's and NJ Transit.

Moody's website displayed an Error Code 500 and instructed individuals to visit Cloudflare's website for more information.

"Today's Cloudflare outage shows how vulnerable the digital economy has become," said Fadl Mantash, the chief information security officer at paytech firm Tribe Payments.

He added, "When a single upstream provider experiences issues, the impact doesn't stay contained; it cascades across industries, touching everything from social media platforms to e-commerce checkouts and backend payment services."

Cloudflare Follows Microsoft, Amazon Web Services Outages

Last month, Microsoft had to deploy a fix to address an outage of its Azure cloud portal that left users unable to access Office 365, Minecraft and other services.

The tech company wrote on its Azure status page that a configuration change to its Azure infrastructure caused the outage.

Amazon also experienced a massive outage of its cloud computing service in October.

Amazon Web Services resolved the issue, but the outage took down a broad range of online services, including social media, gaming, food delivery, streaming and financial platforms.
