Who Is Casey Anthony And What Did She Do?
In 2008, Anthony was a 22-year-old single mother living with her parents in Orlando.
Anthony left the home on June 16, 2008. She told her mother, Cindy Anthony, that she was leaving Caylee with a nanny. A month later, Casey's car was found abandoned in Orlando and towed away. Cindy reported Caylee missing that same day.
Casey told investigators that she left Caylee at an apartment belonging to her nanny, Zenaida "Zanny" Fernandez-Gonzalez. Officials determined that the apartment had been abandoned for over 140 days. She also told police she worked at Universal Studios, but further investigation determined she hadn't worked there since she took maternity leave three years prior.
The jury determined that Anthony's statements about employing Fernandez-Gonzalez as a nanny and working at Universal Studios were false, along with claims that she had told two Universal Studios coworkers that Caylee disappeared and that she had spoken with Caylee after she went missing.
Casey Anthony was sentenced to one year in jail and $1,000 in fines for each of the four counts. She received credit for time served and was released 10 days after the sentencing.
Who Was Caylee Anthony?
Caylee was Anthony's 2-year-old daughter. Caylee's remains were found inside a laundry bag in a wooded area near the Anthony family home. The medical examiner listed Caylee's cause of death as "homicide by undetermined means."
