A recall has been issued for hundreds of cases of bread products due to undeclared allergens that may trigger serious allergic reactions.

The Bakery Group, based in Dallas, Texas, issued a voluntary recall on March 25 for two bread products because they may contain undeclared milk, soy, and FD&C Yellow No. 5 food dye.

Newsweek has contacted The Bakery Group for comment.

Why It Matters

Milk and soy are among the nine major food allergens, as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The list also includes eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame.

Allergic reactions may lead to a number of symptoms, including hives, rashes, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and coughing or wheezing.

In more severe cases, a serious allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, can include swelling of the throat, a drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness.

FD&C Yellow No. 5, also known as tartrazine, is a synthetic lemon-yellow food dye used to color a variety of products, including foods, beverages, medications, and cosmetics. Some individuals, particularly those with aspirin sensitivity, may experience allergic reactions or intolerance to tartrazine.

What To Know

The products included in the recall are:

The Bakery Group said that both products had improper labels that did not declare the presence of the allergens. It warned that customers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy, wheat milk or yellow FD&C No. 5 "run the risk of possible serious allergic reaction" if they consume the products.

The company said the improper labeling was a result of human error in the labeling and packaging department. It added that the error had been corrected as of March 19, 2025.

The products were sold at Ben E. Keith of Fort Worth, Texas, and Rodeo Goat Casa Linda Store in Dallas between December 24, 2024, and March 12, 2025.

The Dense Brioche Pullman loaves were packaged with seven loaves per case, while the 4.5-inch Brioche HB Buns were packaged with 48 buns per case.

The recall was triggered after a routine inspection by the State of Texas Health and Human Services. No illnesses have been reported to date.

What People Are Saying

The Bakery Group said in an announcement: "We greatly apologize for this error and any inconvenience this has caused our distributors and customers."

Customers who bought the affected loaves are urged to contact their distributor for re-labeling or a refund.
