A Texas mom heard her name being called by her two sons from upstairs,
“I thought they’d made some kind of craft—probably light sabers or something like that, but I definitely didn’t expect what I found,” Vera told Newsweek.
Her boys, Bodhi and Boone, had built a tiny cardboard “apartment” complex for their new kitten.

Vera, who did not share her last name, posted a reel on Instagram (@shessoselfish) which captured the moment Bodhi and Boone proudly showed her what they’d created.
Using nothing more than Amazon cardboard boxes, the boys had transformed everyday packaging into cozy little houses designed specifically for their furry family member, Merlin.
Merlin, Vera explained, is a rescue kitten from Austin Animal Shelter whom she surprised the boys with for Christmas after months—if not years—of pleading.
Vera shared the surprise on her Instagram page, where Bodhi and Boone pull out various items fit for a kitten from a gift bag. When Merlin finally appeared, the boys’ faces lit up.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. From the moment he arrived, the kitten became the center of the boys’ world.
“When I saw what they made, it felt like my heart was exploding,” Vera said. “It was the most wholesome, sweet things that showed just what sweethearts my guys are.”
That tenderness wasn’t a surprise to her. Bodhi and Boone have always gravitated toward animals, especially cats, often stopping to play with the neighborhood strays whenever they get the chance. Bringing Merlin home felt less like adding a pet and more like completing the family.
Merlin, it turns out, is more than happy with his new role. “When the boys are with me, his paws barely touch the floor because they are always wanting to carry him and cuddle him,” Vera said.
Her reel went viral on Instagram, clocking up over a million views. In the comments, users also found the moment heartwarming.
“These little boys melt my heart! The way they’re just admiring her using the home they made for her,” one user wrote.
“Oh to be a little kitten loved by children,” another added.
“That's the cutest thing I've seen today,” a third user said.
Many others shared they used to do the same thing with their animals.
“My little brother and I used to build box cities in our basement,” another commented. “My best memory with him.”
“They’re so excited he’s with us now,” Vera said. “And Merlin is beyond perfect for our family.”
