The Toronto Blue Jays have been hit hard by injuries early on this season. Right-hander Cody Ponce suffered a knee injury on March 30 and is now on the 60-day injured list, while right-hander Max Scherzer left Monday's start with right forearm tendinitis after just two innings.

According to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, the Blue Jays aren't terribly concerned about Scherzer.

"The Blue Jays knew this going in and it didn't get any worse," Matheson posted Tuesday on X. "John Schneider is 'fairly confident' he'll make his next start."

However, even if it hasn't gotten any worse at this time, the Blue Jays are going to need to be careful with the 41-year-old right-hander. Perhaps they could dive into the free agent market and give Lucas Giolito a look.

Giolito somehow remains unsigned after a bounceback season with the Boston Red Sox. Last season, he won 10 games and posted a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts.

Health is a concern for Giolito as well, but even if Scherzer is able to make his next start, the Blue Jays are still playing a risky game by allowing him to do so. There is always a risk of the tendinitis getting worse over time, and the Blue Jays can ill afford to lose any more starters, especially with Ponce out for an extended period of time.

Giolito is a former All-Star and can slot into the middle of their rotation if the Blue Jays decide to give him a look. This could potentially help them overcome their slow start and climb back to the top of the American League East. It will be interesting to see what Toronto decides to do.
