Toronto Blue Jays star hurler Kevin Gausman shocked fans last month when he teased that this may be his last season pitching in the MLB.
“I think it’s definitely a possibility,” Gausman told The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon. “I have really loved my time here. Do I know what’s ahead of me? I don’t really know. No idea. It’s something that I have definitely thought about in the offseason.”
Gausman is entering the final season of a five-year, $110 million contract that he signed with the Blue Jays ahead of the 2022 season. Though he remains a talented hurler who posted a 3.59 ERA across 32 starts last season and helped lead Toronto to its first World Series appearance since 1993, he is entering this season at 35 years old.

Despite his rising age, Gausman has remained a consistent contributor for the Blue Jays, making 31 or more starts in each of his first four seasons with the team. Though the 35-year-old is considering retirement after this upcoming season, he is still open to signing an extension and returning to Toronto next season.
“I would love to continue to play for the Blue Jays, I love this organization, I love this city,” Gausman said in a video posted to X by “Foul Territory” on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of things to like when you’re from the outside looking in on where you would want to play.
“I also understand it’s a business, so it’s not always about what everybody wants and sometimes it kind of goes back to just what makes sense for both sides, so we’ll see what happens."
Gausman has continued to prove himself in Toronto, earning an All-Star selection in 2023 and being named the team's opening day starter this season. The Blue Jays are no strangers to bringing on older hurlers who can make an impact, just look at Max Scherzer.
It would not be surprising to see the Blue Jays offer Gausman an extension if he can maintain his high level of play this season.
