Australian Muslims leaders are backing a campaign to produce an Islamic alternative to popular cartoon series Peppa Pig.
The head of the Australian National Imams Council, Sheikh Shady Alsuleiman, has encouraged Australian Muslims to donate to a fundraising campaign by Sydney-based production company One4Kids.
The company is trying to raise 20,000 Australian dollars ($15,000) to produce Bakarah Hills, which is marketed as a "halal cartoon series." The cartoon is set in a Muslim community and is aimed at pre-school children, according to One4Kids. "The show's main objective is to show children what it is like to be a practicing Muslim as well as a good citizen in their community," read a company statement.

Barakah Hills - Peppa Pig Muslim Alternative
We will put you out of your suspense. Introducing BARAKAH HILLS one of our many Peppa Pig alternatives.Barakah Hills represents an ideal Muslim community and is targeted to a post-toddler, pre-school demographic of children. The show’s main objective is to show children what it is like to be a practicing Muslim as well as a good citizen in their community. Children will learn everything from how to have good manners, to how to get actively involved with community projects. The way they learn is not through strict regimented lessons but through seeing how Laylah and Omar, and the supporting characters, do things. Essentially, the viewers will be learning by example. This makes for an educational, engaging and most importantly, fun children’s show. ** The series is still in the development stages.**We need your HELP to fund this project. How you can help?1. In the video posted to the company's Facebook page on December 3, Alsuleiman said: "These days, in this modern age, our children have been embedded and very well occupied watching different cartoons on TV, and it's our responsibility not to stop them watching this but to give them another alternative."
Peppa Pig is one of the world's most popular children's cartoon series. It is currently shown in 180 countries and reportedly generated more than $1bn in revenues from television rights and merchandise in 2014.
One4Kids producer Subhi Alshaik told Australian network SBS that he was not telling Muslims not to watch Peppa Pig. "I actually watch it myself. My kids, when we're together, whack it on and we enjoy it. We have a laugh," said Alshaik. "So I thought, we need a show for the Muslim community… we liked the idea and concept of Peppa Pig, so we thought we'd do something similar."
