Amy Adams found success on television in the HBO limited series Sharp Objects, but she didn't have much luck on TV in the past, she told Seth Meyers Tuesday.

The 43-year-old actress has quite the film career, with five Academy Award and five Golden Globe nominations, in addition to two Golden Globe wins: one for American Hustle in 2014 and another for Big Eyes in 2015. Until the HBO series, she wasn't as successful on the small screen. "I had done television, just not a lot of it had made it to air," she said on NBC's Late Night With Seth Meyers. "Some of it got canceled, and I was also fired from three shows [for] three very different reasons."

She "was bad" in one role, she said. "I was way too young and I was trying too hard." She lost the second role due to another actor's availability. "I wasn't really fired" from the third, she said. "They brought in a really tall blonde … and they dyed my hair red. Then I was fired for not being sexy enough." She agreed.

While Adams didn't name the shows, she said actor Rob Lowe detailed the third instance in his book, Love Life, in 2014. "For the part of my nurse and will-they-or-won't-they love interest, we all agreed on Amy Adams after seeing her in Catch Me If You Can," he wrote about 2004's Dr. Vegas (via E! News). "Clearly she was a substantive actress, beautiful (but not in a TV way) and very, very smart. And together she and I had the one thing you can't fake: chemistry." He disagreed she wasn't "sexy enough."

"I thought my relationship with television was over," Adams told Meyers. "Then [Sharp Objects] came to me, and I was really, really excited by the prospect of coming back in this way."

She is as an executive producer and stars in the series as Camille Preaker. The dark character appealed to her. "When I saw the way they were stretching her out, it's just where I was in my life," she said on the late-night show. "I thought it would be … a real challenge to go to a place like this and test myself as an actress and as a human being."

Adams also took the opportunity to apologize to Christina Applegate and Jennifer Aniston on Seth Meyers' show. "[Applegate is] at the top of my call list, and I have fat cheeks, and I keep accidentally calling her when I smile during other phone calls," she explained, adding it happened "like 300 times" in two months. She also accidentally Facetimed Aniston.
