The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published a recall notice for a Morovan-branded gel nail polish remover after the product was found to contain hazardous chemicals that are prohibited in cosmetic products sold in the United States. In its announcement, the FDA warns customers to “stop using the recalled Nail Polish Remover immediately.”

What Chemicals Were Found?

FDA officials said the recalled nail polish remover contains methylene chloride—which is an ingredient often found in paint stripping and metal cleaning products—and chloroform, which are both substances that are strictly banned in cosmetic formulations “at any level” in the U.S.

Methylene chloride is of particular concern because it has been shown to cause cancer in animal studies and is considered likely to pose serious risks to human health. The chemical has been linked in other contexts to neurological effects, respiratory issues, and, in extreme cases, death, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Chloroform is also considered a hazardous and carcinogenic chemical, according to the National Library of Medicine, and is, therefore, not allowed in cosmetic products.

Under FDA regulations, cosmetic products sold in the U.S. must not contain these substances, regardless of the concentration.

Product Details and Distribution

The recall, announced by the company on April 9 and posted by the FDA on April 13, involves approximately 4,000 units of the product.

The recalled item is marketed as a “Gel Nail Polish Remover” and is sold under the Morovan brand. The product is sold in 15‑milliliter (0.5‑fluid‑ounce) square turquoise bottles with white caps. The product is packaged in a matching green box and marketed as a “fast, safe, and gentle removal of gel nail polish and builder gel.”

The recalled units were manufactured in China and carry a production date of February 7, 2024, and an expiration date of February 7, 2027. According to the FDA, the product was sold on Amazon between August 2025 and January 2026.

The retailer associated with the product is Hongkong Yiixin Trading Limited, which operates under the name Nails Studio.

Consumer Risk and Reported Incidents

At the time of reporting, no injuries related to the product have been reported. However, health officials stress that exposure to prohibited chemicals—even without immediate symptoms—can pose long‑term health risks.

What Consumers Should Do Next

Consumers who have purchased the recalled nail polish remover are advised to stop using it immediately. Morovan has instructed customers to clearly mark the bottle and packaging with the word “Recalled” before disposing of the product in regular household waste, following local disposal regulations.

To receive a refund, consumers must take a photograph of the discarded product clearly showing the “Recalled” label and email it to Morovan’s customer service team at customer-service@morovan.com.
