The saying that a photo is worth a thousand words especially rings true for shelter animal pictures, as it gives adopters their first glimpse into their potential pet, but one owner also realized the story it tells about the animal's past.
Jax had no set plans on adopting an animal soon, but as she scrolled through an adoption page, she came across a specific dog, Grim, that piqued her interest.
"Grim was actually a very spur-of-the-moment adoption!" Jax told Newsweek via Instagram. "I was looking up dogs for adoption for fun and saw a picture of Grim and thought he was the cutest thing. I could not get him out of my mind..."

Jax immediately started researching Australian shepherd mixes—their temperament, expectations and how to care for them. Then, she made her way to the animal shelter where she saw another photo of Grim, which she calls a "mugshot." She fell in love instantly.
His photo, which she shared in a May 25 Instagram video to the account @grimtheozzy, showed him innocently looking up at the camera with giant, hopeful eyes. His scruffy fur spread out around his face like a lion's mane.
For Jax, this picture spoke a thousand words: he experienced a wild past before ending up at the Sean Casey Animal Rescue in New York.
"Turns out he came from a huge non-profit shelter in Arkansas called NovaStar Rescue that houses over 180 dogs and saves many from kill shelters," she said. "He was sent to Sean Casey's shelter in Brooklyn, NY, in the hopes that he would have a higher chance of being adopted."

...
Curiosity got the best of her, and she reached out to NovaStar to learn more about Grim. The shelter told her that Grim's previous owner abandoned him after he stopped being a "small, cute puppy." He was found in the streets of Arkansas.
"Grim is an angel from the first day he was adopted," Jax said. "He has never chewed anything, learned so many tricks and he is practically a velcro dog! It took him a little while to learn to walk politely on the leash, but he's got that down too now!"
Viewer Reactions
The Instagram video amassed over 941,000 views and 115,000 likes as of Tuesday. People fell in love with Grim, celebrating his happy ending with Jax.
"Omg even his hair was all scruffled on his little mugshot— poor baby! The shelter is so stressful on them! I'm so happy you rescued him— and you may have a paid a fee but his loyalty and love is PRICELESS," one viewer said.
Another added: "That baby soooo cute!"
Some worried about the price she paid, which was listed on his adoption sheet for $650, but others said there is no price on a best friend: "The investment will pay itself off."
Jax agreed and said: "The price was a little higher than I anticipated it was going to be, but yes, he is priceless, and I would've paid even four times that if it meant I got to take him home!"
