The 2026 midterms give Democrats a chance to claw back seats two years after President Donald Trump returned to the White House, winning the Electoral College and the national popular vote. Republicans also took control of the Senate and held a narrow House majority, prompting Democrats to debate what went wrong in 2024 and how to reset their message and leadership. The upcoming midterms are expected to be a bellwether of Trump’s tenure and the Republican Party’s performance.

What to Know

The Log Cabin Republicans told Newsweek in an email that the first round of endorsed candidates is:

All of the listed candidates are incumbents. Many of the names have previously been endorsed by the group.

All 435 House seats are on the ballot in November, as representatives serve a two-year term. There are currently 218 Republicans in the House and 214 Democrats. Thirty-three Senate seats are contested in November, with the current breakdown in the chamber of 53 Republicans to 45 Democrats. More Republicans' Senate seats are up for grabs; however, The Cook Political Report has 16 seats as solid Republican, two likely Republican, and two lean Republican, with four as a toss-up, one lean Democrat, one likely Democrat, and 9 solid Democratic.

The endorsement list comes after President Donald Trump said in an interview with former FBI director Dan Bongino on Monday that he would like Republicans to "take over" and "nationalize" voting amid unfounded concerns about electoral fraud in the U.S.

What People Are Saying

Log Cabin Republicans Political Director Noah Rothstein said in a statement emailed to Newsweek: “With strong support from grassroots members and chapters across the nation, the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR) Political Action Committee is excited to announce its first wave of endorsed challengers and incumbents for the 2026 election cycle. Not only do our candidates have the tenacity and grit to maintain our majorities in the U.S. House and Senate, but they also have the experience to bring common sense back to Washington and help President Trump get our country back on track. While each of our candidates are distinct in their stories, experiences, and skills, they stand united in the desire to expand economic opportunity, protect individual liberty, safeguard marriage equality, and prioritize the safety and security of all Americans. These endorsees are candidates that all members of our LCR family can be proud of, and I look forward to welcoming them to Washington in January as members of the 120th Congress.”

Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, told Newsweek for a different article: “President Trump cares deeply about the safety and security of our elections – that’s why he’s urged Congress to pass the SAVE Act and other legislative proposals that would establish a uniform standard of photo ID for voting, prohibit no-excuse mail-in voting, and end the practice of ballot harvesting.”

Republican Nebraska Representative Don Bacon, on X: “I opposed nationalizing elections when Speaker Pelosi wanted major changes to elections in all 50 states. I’ll oppose this now as well. I work w/the NE Gov & Unicameral to ensure we have secure elections where every citizen’s vote counts. This is what the Constitution calls for.”

What Happens Next?
